Daycos is part of a growing trend

. As the cost of health care
rises, employers are turning to preven-
tion to keep costs down.
Health pays
“After two years of having the pro-
gram, we started seeing the benefits,”
says Tammy Day, business owner.
“Our claims costs and insurance
renewals went down, and our overall
culture at work shifted. We under-
stand that there are some things you
can impact and some things you can’t,
but we started to see change.”
According to a RAND Corporation
study, every $1 invested in overall
wellness efforts yields a return on
investment (ROI) of $1.50. When the
investment is in programs targeting
chronic disease, such as diabetes and
obesity, the ROI increases to $3.80.
The incentive and impact for the em-
ployer continues to increase as health
care costs increase.
“Over time we’ve opened up
people’s minds to wellness,” says Pick.
“If we can make a difference in just a
few people’s lives, then all our efforts
are worth it.”
Workplace wellness can have an over-
all effect on a company’s culture and en-
gagement, and on individual employee
health.
Bill Johnston, an employee at
Daycos, recognizes that having a
worksite wellness program increases
his health awareness and prevents it
from getting lost in everything else
during his day. Having a formalized
program gets everyone at his work-
place in that same mode.
“It’s great to work with people who
reinforce healthy behaviors, and you
don’t feel like you are the only one,”
says Johnston. “The more people we
can get involved, the more peer sup-
port there is for everyone. You get to
the point where, if you are not paying
attention to wellness, you are in the
minority.”
A team effort
Giving employees the opportunity to
engage in personal wellness through-
out the day creates a whole new level
of ownership and participation.
“We don’t have an employee dedi-
cated solely to wellness. It’s everyone’s
responsibility and not just from the
top down,” says Day.
Daycos has been able to expand
these opportunities through a partner-
ship with Faith Regional. With the
addition of on-site biometric health
screenings, Daycos has the ability to
measure the success of its wellness
program for years to come. This will
allow it to customize a program based
on the needs of its employees.
Even if a company doesn’t have the
resources to offer a comprehensive
wellness program, it can incorporate
elements of wellness into the work-
place. Research shows that wellness
programs really do make a difference
in reducing overall health care costs,
and a healthy workforce is a win-win
for employers and employees alike.
