POWER

You have the

PAIN REL I EF

ARE YOU

often taking pain relievers to find

relief from headache, neck, back or other

joint pain? Imagine if you had the power to

control your pain and stiffness, and had

the ability to do your work and daily

activities—all with no side effects. There

would be no months of therapy or expen-

sive equipment and no reliance on needles,

injections or surgery.

This reality is possible with the McKenzie

Method in physical therapy. Through the knowl-

edge and guidance from a certified McKenzie

provider, you can use your own skills and re-

sources to achieve pain relief.

What is the McKenzie Method?

The McKenzie Method, or mechanical diagno-

sis therapy (MDT), is a philosophy in physical

therapy that uses active patient involvement and

education. The MDT assessment process enables a

certified therapist to know right away if and how

the method will work for each person, avoiding

expensive diagnostic tests.

“MDT is globally recognized as a leading treat-

ment for back, neck and extremity disorders,”

says Lin Pu, MS, PT, certified MDT therapist at

Faith Regional Rehabilitation Therapies and 1 of

only 10 MDT-certified therapists in the state.

People who follow the treatment process are

less likely to have post-therapy problems. They

can quickly manage their own symptoms with

one specific exercise that can be done easily at

work or home.

“The therapy is very focused on assess-

ing the problem so that the right treatment is

prescribed,” says Pu. “The method emphasizes

self-management and promotes active patient

involvement. Most people who respond to the

method can successfully treat themselves and

minimize the number of visits to therapy or

eliminate them altogether. This gives patients

direct control of their treatment safely and

effectively.”
