LUNG CANCER
kills more men
and women in the U.S. than any
other type of cancer, with currently
6 percent—or 1 in 14 men and 1 in
16 women—diagnosed during their
lifetime. By the time it causes symp-
toms, cancer has often spread outside
the lungs, making it dif cult to treat.
Faith Regional Health Services offers
a procedure called electromagnetic
navigation bronchoscopy (ENB) that
gives patients a minimally invasive op-
tion to locate, do a biopsy on and plan
treatment for a lesion (spot) detected
deep in a person’s lung. ENB enables a
physician to take tissue samples from
very small masses earlier and more
safely than other methods, potentially
detecting lung cancer earlier and en-
hancing treatment options for patients.
Faith Regional is one of the rst in the
area to provide the superDimension
®
i·Logic™ System as an option for
patients who have learned they have a
hard-to-reach lesion on their lung.
The ENB procedure combines GPS-
like technology with a catheter-based
system that uses a patient’s natural
airways to access lesions that were
previously hard to reach. Typically, a
patient with a spot on their lung had
the options of major surgery to re-
move a section of the lung, bronchos-
copy (which does not reach lesions
deep in the lung), needle biopsy or
watchful waiting.
The ENB procedure is typically
performed in an outpatient setting,
and its unique approach may increase
the chances that a patient will safely
get a diagnosis and, if needed, begin
treatment.
ENB is typically performed by a
specialty physician, such as a pulmo-
nologist or thoracic surgeon. Because
ENB is performed in an outpatient
setting, most people go home the day
of the procedure, without requiring
an overnight hospital stay.
“ENB can be used with a wide range
of patients, including those who suf-
fer from poor lung function or have
had cancer surgery, chemotherapy
or radiation therapy,” says Fawad
Chaudry, MD, a
pulmonologist
with Faith Regional
Physician Services
Pulmonology who
has successfully
completed a num-
ber of ENB procedures.
The most common reason for hav-
ing an ENB procedure is an abnormal
nding, such as a spot on the lung on
a chest x-ray or CT (computed tomog-
raphy) scan.
“We are pleased to offer this mini-
mally invasive alternative for patients
who have a hard-to-reach lesion on
their lung or cannot tolerate a more
invasive procedure,” says Dr. Chaudry.
