IMAGINE HAVING TO GIVE

a book review and

the only content you have to make your recommendation

is the cover. You can read the title and the synopsis. A big,

splashy image fills the front—complete with rave reviews.

You probably have a pretty good indication of what the

book is about, but it’s nothing compared to the detail you’d

have if you read the book page by page.

That’s the kind of detail Faith Regional Health Services

now offers with the addition of Genius 3-D mammogra-

phy, available on the Selenia

system from

Hologic. Unlike traditional 2-D mammography, 3-D

mammography captures multiple slices, or images, of your

breasts from several different angles to help doctors make

more accurate diagnoses. It’s almost like turning the pages

of a book.

“In 2-D mammography, snapshot images are taken only

from the top and side of the breast,” says Brian Vonk, MD,

Medical Director of Imaging Services at Faith Regional

Health Services. “In 3-D mammography, the x-ray arm

sweeps in a small arc over the breast for

about four seconds taking multiple im-

ages. These images are then displayed as

a series of thin slices that can be viewed

as individual images or as a dynamic

animation, similar to a CT. True abnor-

malities in a breast can now be located

with greater accuracy compared to 2-D

examinations.”

Advantages of 3-D

The primary advantages of 3-D mam-

mography are greater accuracy and fewer patient callbacks

compared to 2-D mammography. Studies have shown about

a 41 percent increase in breast cancer detection over 2-D

mammography. The increased accuracy also reduces the

number of callbacks for additional images by as much as

40 percent, sparing patients the anxiety, inconvenience and

expense of additional imaging.
