or puts in tubes to help you breathe. Then a splint is placed
over the nose.
Things to consider
You can expect some swelling for a few months, though
most of this resolves within a few weeks. Breathing through
your nose can be a challenge for a while too. But most
people don’t have a lot of pain. Keep in mind that it can
take more than a year for your nose to reach its nal result.
Like any surgery, rhinoplasty has some risks. And insur-
ance usually doesn’t pay for the procedure unless it’s medi-
cally necessary. Still, it can produce dramatic results—and
leave you looking and feeling better.

IT’S A FACT:
How you look may affect how you feel
about yourself.
No one is without aws or imperfections—nor should
we expect to be. But if your appearance is affecting your
self-esteem, there may be something you can do about it.
For those unhappy with the look of their nose, rhinoplasty
can help.
Demetrio J. Aguila III, MD, now performs rhinoplasty
and other aesthetic procedures at Faith Regional. Dr. Aguila
is a reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon who joined Faith
Regional Physician Services in July. He completed his spe-
cialty training at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City,
the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University
in Baltimore. Dr. Aguila is board-certi ed in plastic and
reconstructive surgery, as well as otolaryngology.
It’s all in the details
Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape the nose. It may be an
option for people born with a nose they don’t like or whose
nose has changed due to aging or injury. Some people turn
to the surgery when they have breathing problems, as well.
“Rhinoplasty can be both a functional as well as an aes-
thetic procedure,” says Dr. Aguila. “If a patient has dif -
culty breathing as well as cosmetic concerns, often they can
be addressed simultaneously.”
You may be a candidate for rhinoplasty if you’re at least
13 years old and your face has stopped growing; you are
healthy; you don’t smoke; and you have speci c—but realistic—
goals for your appearance.
Rhinoplasty is performed while you’re sedated or under
general anesthesia. Dr. Aguila is one of the few surgeons in
the region who offers an endonasal rhinoplasty approach—
sometimes called a scarless rhinoplasty since none of the
scars are visible on the outside.
Once Dr. Aguila has access to underlying bone and car-
tilage, he can reshape it, either by removing tissue or by
adding cartilage or tissue grafts. Sometimes he packs the nose
