Q
How do I know if a gluten-
free diet is right for me?
Dr. King:
With gluten intolerance, you
will definitely have abdominal symp-
toms such as cramping
and diarrhea. You may
feel better adopting a
gluten-free diet, which
means eliminating
any product con-
taining gluten or
wheat. Regardless
of whether you
are gluten-in-
tolerant or not,
a gluten-free
diet can still be
a healthy diet if
you replace glu-
ten with plenty
of healthy fruits
and vegetables
and gluten-free
whole grains and
limit processed
foods. Be sure to
ask your doctor
before starting
a gluten-free
diet.
Q
I have pain and swelling in my
legs as well as varicose veins.
What can I do about this?
Dr. Boyle:
Varicose veins can be the
result of a condition
called venous reflux,
which is caused by
a failure of valves in
the veins of the legs.
The failure of these
valves causes blood
to pool and expand
the veins, lead-
ing to the varicose
veins that people
can see in their
legs. Treating this
condition usually
involves using an
endovascular tech-
nique that ablates
the diseased vein,
making it seal
shut. Over time, the
treated vein shrinks
and is absorbed by
the body. Compared to
surgical options, this
technique results in less
pain and a quicker
recovery.
