What if you had the power to control your pain, stiffness, and ability to do your work and other activities? No months of therapy or expensive equipment. No reliance on needles, injections or surgery. It’s possible with the McKenzie Method offered at Faith Regional Physical Therapy. Customized to you The McKenzie Method, or mechani- cal diagnosis therapy (MDT), is a philosophy in physical therapy that uses active patient involvement and education. An MDT-trained physical therapist will listen closely as you talk about your symptoms. You will then be asked to perform certain movements and rest in certain positions. The therapist uses this information to determine which movement and posture would be best for treatment. This assessment process enables a certified therapist to know right away if and how the method will work for each person, avoiding expensive diagnostic tests. You’re in control Patients who follow the treatment process are less likely to have post- therapy problems. They are also given one exercise or movement that can quickly alleviate their symptoms and restore their functions at home or work. “This type of therapy is very focused on assessing the problems to determine if they are mechani- cal in nature. If not, the patient will be referred back to their physician,” says Lin Pu, PT, MDT diplomate, at Faith Regional Physical Therapy. “The method emphasizes self-management and promotes active patient in- volvement. Most people who respond to the method can suc- cessfully treat themselves and minimize the number of visits to therapy, or eliminate them altogether. This gives patients direct control of their treat- ment safely and effectively.” If you think the McKenzie Method may work for you, talk to your doctor. A physician referral is required.
