In fact, it’s how he first got interested in medicine. When he was 19, he translated for a group of surgeons who were performing free surgeries in Brazil. Then, while Dr. Gangwer was complet- ing his residency in Oakland, California, he travelled to Peru on his first trip with Operation Rainbow. It’s something that he wants to continue to do. “It’s one of my life goals,” says Dr. Gangwer. “I want to go do these kind of things once a year. I always have said, anytime you’re serving other people, you always get more back then you give. You don’t go for that reason, but that just seems to be how it works.” FRHS.ORG 11
