SO YOU’VE DECIDED to have a knee or hip joint replaced. Good for you! Joint replacement surgery can help you get around better with less pain. That’s a big deal. But what happens after your surgery is also pretty important. Physical therapy is a key part of recovery after joint surgery. It can help your leg get stronger. And it can help you move your new joint better. At Faith Regional, your journey with physical therapy will start prior to your joint replacement. You’ll meet with a physical therapist to set you up for success upon returning home. You will learn how to use your walker, protect your joint as it’s healing, and exercises to begin prior Why you need it after joint surgery PHYSICAL THERAPY: to surgery. You’ll also participate in our Orthopedics in Motion class, where you will get a grand overview of how to prepare for your surgery, your hospitalization, and how to continue your healing and rehabili- tation at home to get you back to doing the things you love. You may also have an in-home visit with an occupational therapist, who can help provide guidance on bathing and dressing and address home safety issues and other con- cerns when you return home. Regaining strength and mobility Right after your surgery, your physical therapist will help you begin to perform the exercises After I had my knee replacement, I needed a partnership to get back to where I wanted to be, and that’s where Faith Regional came in. They did such a good job with the education piece. I’m at the stage of my life where I want to be more active, not less active. I appreciate what Dr. Lammli and the folks at Faith Regional physical therapy were able to do for me, relieving me of the pain so I can go fishing, golfing and do the things I want to do. I was able to get that mobility back. Even six weeks out, I have full motion, no joint pain and am ready to move on with my life. —John B. 8 FAITH REGIONAL HEALTH SERVICES
