FRHS.ORG 15 Cancer can not only severely im- pact a patient’s and their family’s physical and emotional health, but also their financial health. While most direct medical costs are at least in part covered by basic insurance, patients often incur many other nonmedical expenses—such as transportation to and from treatment, a nurse’s aide, or nutritional supplements. The financial impact of cancer can also be compounded for pa- tients who are no longer able to work because of the disease. That’s why Faith Regional is committed to offering compas- sionate support to cancer survivors throughout northeastern and north-central Nebraska. Compassionate support for surviving cancer Help in recovery and survivorship In 2013, the Hope Fund was estab- lished by a local cancer survivor to provide ongoing funding for items and services that support cancer recovery and survivorship. All of the donations to the Hope Fund directly benefit patients with cancer. Through the Hope Fund, Faith Regional is able to offer the following items to cancer patients and survivors, free of charge: • Bras, breast protheses and equalizers for breast cancer survivors. • Gas cards for cancer patients who have to travel 50-plus miles to receive treatment. • Nutritional supplements for cancer patients with dietary needs. • Grocery gift cards for cancer patients to help supplement food costs so other financial needs can be met. • Cancer-related lymphedema sleeves that are not covered by insurance. • Other cancer-related emer- gency needs on a case-by-case basis. Often these needs are identi- fied by Faith Regional social workers and nurse navigators, who work closely with cancer patients throughout their journey to connect them with resources and support programs available.
