8 FAITH REGIONAL HEALTH SERVICES BIG & LOUD LSVT’s impact on Parkinson’s patients PARKINSON’S DISEASE is a brain disorder. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain that produce a chemical called dopamine either don’t work properly or die. Dopamine is needed to help coordinate movement. When less dopamine is produced in the brain, the ability to control movement is hindered. Scientists still don’t know what causes these cells to stop working or die. While there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, treatment, including rehabilitation therapy, can help.
