Today, nearly all new doctors in the United States complete a hospital-based residency after graduating medi-
cal school. A residency provides the doctor with in-depth, on-the-job training in a particular eld of medicine.
Residency programs can range from three years in length (for elds like pediatrics and internal medicine) up
to seven years (for elds like neurosurgery).
After residency, a doctor may pursue more specialized training called a fellowship. Specialties like cardi-
ology, nephrology and oncology, for instance, all require fellowship training after a residency program in
internal medicine. Seeking out the right provider for your care can help make your experience a successful one.
