NEW TECHNOLOGY HELPS DIAGNOSE AND
TREAT PROBLEMS OF THE PANCREAS
PATIENTS
at Faith Regional Health
Services can now benefit from a new
minimally invasive technology that
helps diagnose and treat diseases and
conditions in the bile duct, hepatic
ducts and pancreas.
SpyGlass
TM
DS Direct Visualization
System offers high-resolution
imaging and therapy during
an endoscopic retrograde
cholangiopancreatography (ERCP),
a specialized technique used to
study the bile ducts, pancreatic
duct and gallbladder. In the U.S.,
500,000 people undergo ERCP
annually to investigate, confirm and
treat conditions such as gallstones,
suspected malignancies (such
as pancreatic cancer), bile duct
strictures and cystic lesions.
When things are tricky
“The SpyGlass DS Direct Visualization
System can be used for large, compli-
cated stones that a regular ERCP can’t
take care of,” says Fadi Rzouq, MD,
gastroenterologist at Faith Regional
Physician Services Gastroenterology.
“During an ERCP, I can add the
SpyGlass technology if needed, which
is typically about 15 to 20 percent
of these procedures. It can save the
patient from having to have multiple
surgeries.”
Success story
Dr. Rzouq used the SpyGlass tech-
nology on a patient who was expe-
riencing jaundice and had multiple
stones in his bile duct. He was able to
clear every stone from the duct. The
procedure took about 30 minutes,
and the patient went home an hour
later.
